Old Ebe has always enjoyed living in the quiet mountain town of Crossings. That changes when newcomers, the towns people call the “dog-farmers,” bought the valley near Ebe's home to breed vicious attack dogs. None of the locals appreciate the newcomers' bullying ways.
When Ebe's dog, Dipper, goes missing, Ebe expects help from his new neighbors to find him. Instead, Rabler, the leader of the lowlanders, threatens to kill Ebe’s dog if he ever sees the animal. Ebe begins to suspect the newcomers hide something more sinister than raising attack dogs, but when Ebe turns to the authorities for support, they turn a blind eye.
As a last resort, Ebe approaches the reclusive Dissenters, a people with magical powers who live deeper into the Sierra foothills. Ebe’s former teacher, Old Nance, tries to help her former student, only to get murdered. Now Ebe must avenge Nance’s death to regain his self-respect, in a deadly confrontation against enormous odds.
