Seeing ghosts has plagued thirteen-year-old Dumdie Swartz since early childhood. Her strange attempts to avoid spirits create a lonely life. Her sisters constantly mock her, her parents are clueless, and her social life is zero. Dumdie’s only refuge is working in a shared garden with her elderly neighbor, Mr. Carson.
That is, until a raid on Mr. Carson’s pumpkin patch leaves him initially hurt, then dead.
One of the boys involved in the raid is Kyle, who is quick to bully Dumdie into silence. Dumdie senses something evil living within Kyle, and the more Kyle threatens her, the clearer Dumdie perceives the evil thing possessing him: a demon.
Dumdie suddenly finds herself on the run from Kyle, but can another spirit—that of Mr. Carson—save her?
"Dolores Swartz, Dumdie, sees things most people shouldn’t. Not by choice is she socially awkward, but something about her is just different than others her age. She describes her chilling sightings to us and I wonder how someone could become so damaged at such a young age. This poor girl cannot tell her family what she is experiencing, and she doesn’t have many friends with whom she can relate with. Survival can seem unbearable at times, but Dumdie must find a way out of this nightmare she secretly lives in. This is a short book that can be read in about 40 minutes and I enjoyed the underlying message."
